The book “Songs of the Deliverer” tells the story of Christ re-cast in modern day. The book is a work of fiction but the stories and characters are based on the Gospels of the New Testament. These Reflections are written to highlight the Biblical pericopes.

Have you ever been driving down a road not knowing where you are going? Perhaps it’s late, it’s raining, and it’s difficult to see the road ahead as it rushes before you. You’re feeling anxious, worried, wondering if something bad could happen. You’re lost and feeling as if you are all alone. You ask yourself: how will I make it home?
Is that sometimes how we feel about life? Lost and alone, how will I make it home?
They gather for supper for the last time. Together in the room, they wait in anticipation to hear the final words from their Teacher, the Messiah. They ask concerned questions that reflect their many doubts: where are you going? Why can’t we come? Why can’t we know where you are going?
How can we know the way?
“I am the way, the truth, and the life.” (John 14:6)
That was the definitive answer Jesus gave the apostles at their last supper. Those were the directions for life that he told them to follow. He also told them this:
“My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” (John 14:2 – 3)
He assured them that a place would be ready for them in God’s heavenly kingdom if only they followed him. He told them many more things, even things they would not understand until later. But on this night on the eve of the fulfillment of his divine mission, he told them the one thing most important for them to know: Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life.
They were worried, heading along a road they did not know, they wondered if something bad could happen to them. They were feeling lost and thinking they were about to be left all alone. They asked, how will they find their way home?
“I am the way.”
Are you worried? Do you wonder what road to follow? Are you feeling lost and alone? Do you want to know the way home?
